Three Boston-area middle schoolers face a life-changing transition as Meleah, Makai and Exavion—all slated to attend their local public high schools—decide to take a chance on a very different path instead. In the fashion of the critically-acclaimed Hoop Dreams (1994), this compelling and emotionally resonant new film chronicles each student’s journey at the non-profit Beacon Academy, a 14-month program between middle and high school that aims to help low-income students of color prepare to apply to the most competitive private high schools in the Northeast. The goal is to access the futures those elite spaces afford, but what will be the cost? As seniors, four years later, the students revisit their exceptional journeys and reflect on that exact question.
