New England Conservatory: Actor Prep Workshop

Nov 06, 2024 - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM EST

This event will be held in person.

Where: Hibernian Hall, 184 Dudley Street, Roxbury, MA 02119

Vocal warmups, tongue twisters, physical warmups, emotional preparation, getting out of your head and into the scene, improvisation, and more! This workshop is for every actor who may be bored with their preparation and those just entering the world of how to prepare for auditions, callbacks, and filming.

All are welcome to this special New England SAG-AFTRA Conservatory, in collaboration with the Roxbury International Film Festival, and presented by Secret Society of Black Creatives Actors Forum members, and SAG-AFTRA members David J. Curtis, Liz Eng, Naheem Garcia and Andrea Lyman. 

This Actor Prep Workshop is open to all SAG-AFTRA members and the general public!

Black Media: Pioneers Then and Now is a day-long symposium created to highlight Black media professionals and their innovative and important work in the journalism, PR, marketing, advertising, and film industries. Our symposium speakers have broken barriers in their fields, amplified Black voices and stories, and navigated the challenges that still exist for Black storytellers and communications professionals. Their experiences and perspectives will be shared on panels ranging in topics from the future of antiracist journalism to cultivating diverse talent in the media industry. Attendees will network with other media professionals, gain insight into their own careers and ambitions, and celebrate the important work–past, present, and future–of Black media.

ABOUT THE SCRIPT

LENA AND LEONARD

Lena and Leonard meet the night before he leaves for basic training during World War II. Lena moves on with her life and a new relationship with Mad Williams, yet Leonard never leaves her mind or her heart. Leonard and Lena marry when he returns home but life isn’t easy and the city of Boston becomes its own powder keg of rules and regulations. This black couple accepted the challenge of war but can they survive a riot and each other?

TWO SCENES

Date Night at Wally's

Lena and Leonard have a rare date night when Fingers, Leonard's friend from his military days, comes to town to play a gig at Wally's. Now favored sons in Europe, Fingers and his band are embraced by his adopted home once the war is over. The Morgan household is in chaos with Lena's cousin Mabel in charge of the children as the Lena and Leonard head out.

The Front Porch is the Boxing Ring

Leonard hopes to start his own construction business; he thinks he will have a better chance if he moves his growing family to his sister's home in Virginia. However, sometimes wherever you go you follow.

The Boston Globe’s Black History Month Film Festival

Co-presented GlobeDocs, A Beautiful Resistance, RoxFilm, and the Museum of Science. The Boston Globe is proud to host its 4th annual Black History Month Film Festival. This event series aims to celebrate the lives, culture, and creativity of Black Americans through a mix of classic and new films, which will be available for virtual viewing throughout the month. Each screening will be followed by a virtual panel event to provide insight and context for these stories of strength, joy, and love.

Film screenings include If Beale Street Could Talk, Crooklyn, Eve’s Bayou, and The Mural Master — along with an in person event, A Beautiful Resistance Live!

Film buffs already recognize her costumes, and now cinephiles and the most casual of movie-goers will be able to put a face and a story to the award-winning work of Ruth E. Carter. The Springfield, Mass. native, who was the first Black woman to win an Oscar for costume design, joins the Globe’s Jenee Osterheldt for an intimate conversation about following her lifelong passion, her work on “Black Panther,” and more.

This year's Summit will take place in-person at WBUR CitySpace with the option to also tune in virtually via livestream. Ruth E. Carter will be joining virtually.

Bivins, CEO of SportyRich Enterprises, as he celebrates the 40th Anniversary of New Edition and continues to serve as an ambassador for the community of Roxbury and the City of Boston. They'll also talk about the process of creating his recent docufilm, "The Hustle of @617MikeBiv," which details his life as a kid from Roxbury's Orchard Park Projects who dreamed of playing in the NBA, but due to his popularity, was redirected into becoming an entertainment and business heavyweight.
